摘要

India's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is seeking at any cost to lock in oil and gas supplies, notably in Nigeria. Africa Energy Intelligence understands the group has teamed up with a consortium of Nigerian banks led by First Bank in order to facilitate talks concerning a gas supply contract involving 3 million tons per year. The talks kicked off a full two years ago but were greatly held back by the change of government in Nigeria last year. In return for gas supplies, NTPC has proposed building and operating two power stations in the country, with one running on coal and generating 500 MW and the other supplied with gas and boasting a capacity of 700 MW. The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the deal in May, 2007. Numerous Indian groups, among them the state-run oil company ONGC, made similar promises to the Nigerian government in the past. However, none of the projects has yet seen the light of day.
