In Benin, agriculture is: 1. the first sector in the economy with 31% of GDP, 43% of the labor force, 70% of export earning with cotton fiber; 2. 400,000 small-scale farms from 1 to 10 ha, 3. Extensive farming systems with 75% of land preparation made with hoe, 24% with animal-drawn equipment and only 1% mechanized. But it is also, 4. An obvious agricultural potential with less than 20% (approximately 1,375,000 ha) of the utilized agricultural area are cultivated, a young population, and a favorable agro-climatic environmental conditions.
