On 30 January 2003, SAF/AA formally approved the Directorate of Financial Workforce Management (SAF/FMPW). The Honorable Michael Montelongo directed the creation of this organization to provide visible commitment to the April 2002 SAF/FM vision that stated: 1. We must act now to create a work environment that will attract and retain the best financial people in the country, uniformed and civilian to come work for us. 2. Once we recruit the best, we must offer them a world-class work environment in which their ideas are valued, they are constantly trained, and their performance is rewarded not only with bonuses and other incentives, but also with increasing responsibility and authority. 3. Training must be meaningful. We must train our managers to innovate, think, and lead. 4. Finally those of us with experience must become mentors.
