Consultants... they're at every ASMC National PDI. In recent years, their numbers have burgeoned. What do these private sector specialists know that brings them out in force? They're keenly aware that the financial management (FM) world is overflowing with data and information, but that financial managers themselves have less and less time to make sense and proper use of that information. What many of these vendors offer is knowledge management (KM). In many ways, the Air Force is no different than most large, private sector corporations. The Air Force produces a plethora of financial data every day, and its leaders must base innumerable critical decisions, at least in part, on expert analysis of the financial data. To become better financial advisors to decision-makers at all levels, the Air Force FM community must accelerate its development and implementation of knowledge management systems. Knowledge results when information and insight converge, providing the foundation for decisions and action. One facet of KM, information technology (IT) based systems, can help spread knowledge throughout an organization, ensuring it gets to decision-makers at the right time and in a usable form that leads to sound decisions. Most importantly, the aging of the FM civilian workforce, combined with manning shortfalls and relative inexperience of much of the financial officer corps, demands that the Air Force FM community implement knowledge management without further delay.
