Patrick Daw son Fleming was a 19-victory ace flying Navy Gramman Hellcats in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He then went on to become an outstanding Air Force test pilot and commander until his life was cut short on Feb. 16, 1956, in the first crash ofaB-52. Few men everpacked so much into such a short military career. In less than nine years in the Air Force, Fleming flew as a test pilot at Wright Field in Ohio and Edwards Air Force Base in California, led a bomb group in Strategic Air Command, played a key role in the adaptation of the B-47 into service, became an authority on nuclear weapons, conducted deep-black overflights of the Soviet Union, and led the introduction of the Boeing B-52 into service at Castle AFB, Calif., as deputy wing commander.
