The Congressional Budget Office says the Air Force and Army are going in opposite directions on unmanned aerial vehicles. CBO reports that DOD's budget for Fiscal 2012 allots $4.6 billion to develop and buy its planned medium-size and large UAVs, and $3.7 billion to $5.7 billion annually thereafter. USAF plans to purchase 288 Reapers, 28 Global Hawks, and about 200 of an unspecified type, raising its inventory from 300 to nearly 700. Meanwhile, the Army, which today has roughly 500 medium-size unmanned aircraft, will see attrition reduce the inventory of Shadows and Grey Eagles to 400 aircraft by 2020. As the chart shows, the Navy and Marine Corps are and will continue to be negligible players in unmanned aircraft operations.
