Tests of newly upgraded C-5 Galaxy airlifters, which were wrapped up in January, have proved that the giant aircraft can be rendered operationally relevant for several decades to come. The results, in conjunction with a soon-to-be-released major mobility study, may reopen debate about the proper mix of strategic lift aircraft.rnThe operational evaluations were conducted throughout late 2009. They demonstrated that C-5s equipped with new engines, new avionics, and about 70 other improvements will climb faster, fly farther, and break far less often than the standard Galaxy.
