The Air Force announced April 2 that Barksdale AFB, La., is the preferred site for the permanent headquarters of Air Force Global Strike Command, the new nuclear-centric major command scheduled to commence operations at the end of September to oversee the service's nuclear-capable bomber and ICBM forces. Two weeks later on April 16, President Obama nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Frank G. Klotz to head the new command. Klotz, who has been assistant vice chief of staff since August 2007, has extensive experience with Minuteman ICBMs and nuclear matters.
