On Dec. 7, 1941, 2,390 Americans died in Japan's surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, a military operation planned by Adm. Isoroku Yama-moto. It was an act that made Imperial Japan's greatest commander the focal point of intense American hatred and innumerable calls for vengeance. Yamamoto's goal at Pearl Harbor was annihilation of the US Pacific Fleet, achievement of which would have decided the outcome of the war "on the first day," wrote his biographer, Hiroyuki Agawa. In this, Yamamoto failed. The US fleet began striking back early in 1942.
