摘要

When the Air Force opened shop as a service separate from the Army in 1947, USAF leaders wanted the airmen to wear a "plain blue suit," unadorned except for rank insignia, award ribbons, and aviation badges. Things haven't exactly worked out that way. Planning for the plain but distinctive dress uniform began as early as the fall of 1945, two years before the separate Air Force became a reality. The Personal Equipment Laboratory at Wright Field, Ohio, developed what it said could be the basis of an Air Force uniform if the air arm separated from the Army.
