The operational Air Force is starting to get some payoff from its ong-delayed and greatly reduced modernization efforts. New aircraft, weapons, and other systems acquired in recent years now are coming into use around the world. In the past year, the F-22 stealth fighter became operational at Langley AFB, Va., the GPS guided Small Diameter Bomb was fielded in Southwest Asia, and C-17 strategic airlifters were delivered to operational units outside the continental United States, to cite three prominent examples. Top leaders at the Air Force Association's 2006 Air & Space Conference in Washington, D.C., said they will continue to push for such new capabilities.
