President Bush on April 22 nominated Marine Corps Gen. Peter Pace to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pace, currently the vice chairman, would succeed Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, who is expected to retire this fall after four years as the President's top military advisor. If confirmed by the Senate, Pace would become the first Marine Corps officer to serve as JCS chairman. He is already the first vice chairman to come from the Marine Corps. Pace began his career as a platoon leader during the Vietnam War and commanded US Southern Command before joining the Joint Staff.
