Russia's United Instrument Corporation announced in early December that the Ⅱ-80 airborne command post will return to service with the Russian Air Force by the end of 2015 after upgrade. No information about the scope of the Ⅱ-80M modernisation is available. However, new antennas on the fuselage include a dozen small blade-shaped antennas on the aircraft's spine, and a new hockey stick antenna just behind them. The official press release says the new system features increased survivability, functionality and reliability, lower weight and size, as well as lower energy consumption. The Ⅱ-80 Maxdome is a strategic airborne command post assigned to the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces; the aircraft, converted from an Ⅱ-86 widebody airliner.
