The German Bundeswehr will lease and operate three to five Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) Heron TP medium-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned air vehicles. Announced on January 12, the programme, valued at €600 million, will run from 2018 to about 2025 and is intended to provide an interim capability until a comparable European UAV is deployable. Training will take place in Israel until the Heron TP can be certified for operations in Europe. Industry support will be provided by Airbus, which has set up a partnership agreement with IAI.
