There is no more significant current trainer requirement than that for the US Air Force Trainer Experimental (T-X) which is being procured as part of the Advanced Pilot Training (APT) programme. Before the end of 2016, the US Air Force is expected to launch the competition formally - which may involve a fly-off. One of four designs - two of which have not yet been publicly revealed -will be selected to replace 431 Northrop T-38C Talon trainers, a type that has been in service since the 1950s. A fatal T-38 accident in 2008, due to fatigue-induced structural failure, has led the US Air Force to go ahead with the T-X programme despite the limitations to its procurement funds. "Airplanes are falling apart," US Air Force Chief of Staff General Mark Welsh said in 2014. "There's just too many things happening because our fleets are too old."
