Is the Norwegian All Weather Search and Rescue Helicopter (NAWSARH) the world's most capable and advanced SAR helicopter? It is hard to refute those claims, made by Leonardo Helicopters' Managing Director Daniele Romiti during the aircraft's official unveiling. Its mission systems and capability match its impressive looks. On December 19, 2013, AgustaWestland (now Leonardo Helicopters) signed a contract with the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MoJPS) for the supply of 16 AgustaWestland AW101 Mk612 helicopters (plus options for six more) to meet Norway's requirements. As one might expect from one of the world's great SAR nations, the MoJPS and the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) came to the negotiating table with a very clear vision of how their future SAR helicopter should perform. Its Statement of Intent was the most demanding ever received by AgustaWestland.
