When the Royal Australian Air Force retired its Lockheed C-130H Hercules fleet at the end of 2012, it left a capability gap that, at the time, its newer C-130J-30s were unable to fill completely. Since the mid-1960s, the Royal Australian Air Force had employed two squadrons of Hercules with one (No.36 Squadron, flying C-130As and later C-130Hs) primarily in the tactical role, and the other (No.37 Squadron, with C-130Es and later C-130J-30s) largely taking care of the air logistics, or strategic transport, missions.
