Russian President Vladimir Putin has personally called for the development of a short-haul airliner. Speaking on May 12 at an aerospace industry manufacturing development meeting held in Sochi, he said: "We need a new plane. Certainly, it is possible to import this aircraft, as we have done this up to now, but for such a country as ours, certainly, our own aircraft is needed, with such a huge territory as we have." Putin specified that such an aircraft, "should [be] competitive on the global markets", carrying from 50 to 60 passengers and with an ability to operate from short and unimproved (including unpaved) runways. The aircraft is needed, he said, to link destinations within a region, rather than requiring passengers to use a national hub such as Moscow or St Petersburg. He reminded the audience that the Soviet Union had operated large numbers of such indigenous airliners.
