More than 40 years after its maiden flight, the F-16 Fighting Falcon is still firmly the most numerous western fighter aircraft in service. No other type is ever likely to reach the production numbers achieved by the General Dynamics design. When the F-16 first entered production, the western world's fighter portfolio comprised the AJ 37 Viggen, F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, Mirage F1 and the SEPECAT Jaguar. Today, in the west, only the F-15 remains in production; all the other types listed are long gone. The fighter market has also changed. Demand for fighter aircraft remains, but outside of the order books for the F-35 Lightning Ⅱ and the Eurofighter Typhoon, which have swallowed up different requirements in Europe and the United States, there isn't a lot happening. Finland, Belgium, Switzerland and some East European nations have competitions. Belgium wants the F-35. Finland might like the Super Hornet or the F-35, and Switzerland couldn't get what it selected, the Gripen E, following a public referendum. AIR International correspondents have visited specific operational units each flying one of the west's six fighter aircraft types in production today. Arctic Gripens, Texan Vipers (F-16s), Flying Eagles (Super Hornets), Bavarian Tigers (Eurofighters), Gorillas (F-35s) and more Tigers from Brittany (Rafale Ms) fill 37 pages covering frontline training and operations.
