In this era of low-intensity, asymmetrical conflicts, the US Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) is probably one of the busiest military organisations in the world. Headquartered at Hurlburt Field, Florida, AFSOC controls five flying wings and one group based in three continents, and can be called to operate anytime, anywhere, to support theatre commanders with special operations roles. Probably the most representative AFSOC unit is the 1st Special Operations Wing (1st SOW) based at Hurlburt. The wing's flying unit is the 1st Special Operations Group (SOG) with eight assigned squadrons, five of which operate aircraft: the AC-130U-equipped 4th Special Operations Squadron (SOS); the CV-22B Osprey-equipped 8th SOS; the MC-130H-equippcd 15th SOS; and the U-28A-equipped 34th and 319th SOS.
