After 17 months of negotiations, the contract for 36 Dassault Rafales was finally signed in Delhi on September 23 by the Indian and French Ministers of Defence; Mano-har Parrikar and Jean-Yves Le Drian. The deal is said to be worth €8 billion and should include 28 single seat and eight two-seat Rafales. The first of the 36 aircraft is due to be delivered in 2019 and the last is expected to arrive in India only two and a half years later. Although this order is the biggest Rafale deal to date, most of the press coverage is about what is going to happen with the remaining aircraft that were originally outlined in the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) competition. Many press outlets are still referring to the 126-aircraft competition (and 63 options) that the Rafale won over the Eurof ighter in 2012 but that never materialised due to disagreements between the negotiating parties, and either take position for or against the Rafale regarding follow-up orders.
