It is a sunny and busy day at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point near the city of Havelock in North Carolina. While EA-6B Prowlers and AV-8B Harrier Us queue up short of the runway for take-off, a TAV-8B Harrier !l with its student pilot compietes its vertical landing training. With three operational Harrier squadrons and one Harrier training squadron, Cherry Point is the cradie of V/STOL aviation in the United States. Amongst many units the base is home . to Marine Attack Training Squadron 203 (VMAT-203) 'Kestrels' and Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231) 'Ace of Spades'. AIR International visited the squadrons to learn about the role of the AV-8B Harrier II in the US Marine Corps and the importance of specialised training.
