摘要

A prototype volcanic ash detector has been installed in a British Airways Boeing 747-400 as efforts continue to improve the monitoring of ash particles in the world's airways and prevent future travel disruption. The device, named ZEUS after the Greek god, has been developed by the UK Met Office and the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). It's the first system of its kind fitted to an aircraft flying long-haul services. The technology was used for the first time on a Heathrow- Johannesburg flight In the autumn - data from the trip has been downloaded and is now being analysed by Met Office scientists. The system will continue to collect data from the jumbo's flights for the next year.
