Just six months after the first of 14 new RAF Boeing Chinook HC6 helicopters was officially unveiled at RAF Odiham, Hampshire, on June 16 last year, the variant successfully achieved its Initial Operational Capability (IOC) - defined as three aircraft ready for use - as planned during January. The £1 billion investment in the HC6 is one of two ongoing Chinook enhancement programmes whose scale and depth is unprecedented in recent times. Group Captain Richard Maddison, the Chinook Force CO and RAF Odiham station commander, told AIR International when we visited Odiham to take a closer look: "Alongside the HC6 introduction, which is going brilliantly, we're in the process of converting all legacy aircraft to the [Project] Julius cockpit and training aircrew on two different types of aircraft and cockpit.
