CFM International has started flight testing the Boeing 737 MAX'S LEAP-1B engine. The powerplant was flown aboard GE Aviation's 747 flying test-bed from the GE Aviation Flight Test Operations facility in Victorville, California, on April 29 during a five-hour, 30-minute flight. Testing will evaluate gauge engine operability, stall margin, performance, emissions and acoustics, and validate technologies such as the woven carbon fibre composite fan, ceramic matrix composite shrouds in the high-pressure turbine and titanium aluminide blades in the low-pressure turbine. The target is to certify the LEAP-1B next year.
