For generations, Boeing produced aircraft by building up sections on its final assembly lines. With the 787, its Everett, Washington factory and Boeing South Carolina plant at North Charleston instead integrate large sections that arrive pre-installed with systems. Another difference from previous Boeing airliners is the very extensive international collaboration between Boeing and partners worldwide. Companies in Japan, Italy, South Korea, the UK, France, Sweden, Germany and Canada, as well as firms across the United States, are involved (see panel). This level of outsourcing was unprecedented for Boeing, which delegated responsibility for the detailed design engineering and production to its partners. Asked by AIR International about how it ensures supply chain stability given this international network, a Boeing spokeswoman said: "We work closely with our suppliers to ensure they maintain the expertise, capacity and stability throughout their operations and across their supply chains necessary to meet our planned production increases, now and into the future. We build detailed, comprehensive plans that define the actions, resources and timing required to successfully meet and sustain rate increases.
