Externally there is little to differentiate the Merlin HM2 from the legacy Mk 1. Inside however the helicopter has an updated layout for both the pilots and two Air Warfare Officers, who now operate a redesigned rear mission console. Although primarily configured for the anti-submarine warfare role, the console can be split up and the helicopter used for missions such as troop transport and casualty evacuation. Open architecture and multi-mission systems with touch-screen capability have improved the man-machine interface. New flat screen displays, mission computers and software, radar and acoustics processors and upgraded datalink capabilities will enable the Merlin HM2 to remain effective in the underwater warfare role for the foreseeable future.
