No.51 Squadron's Nimrod Rls have been given a 90-day extension to their service careers. The two electronic intelligence (ELJNT) gathering aircraft were due to be retired at the end of March, but earlier in that month the decision was announced that withdrawal will be postponed by 90 days. This will allow the aircraft to remain in operational service until late June. Although no official reason has been given for the reprieve, the need to gather information about the current situation in Libya is likely to be behind the extension. NATO and Arab leaders have held talks concerning the establishment of a no-fly zone over Libya, and one of the prerequisites for such a move would be updating the Libyan electronic order of battle, the role undertaken by No.51 Squadron.
