Australian regional carrier Virgin Blue announced on February 25 that it had ordered up to 18 ATR 72 regional airliners. The aircraft are part of a wider strategic alliance signed on January 21 between it and Skywest Airlines, which will operate the aircraft. Skywest serves domestic routes from its base in Western Australia, and under a wet lease will provide technical and cabin crew for the turboprops, as well as sourdng a maintenance facility for the fleet. All of the aircraft will be configured for 68 passengers and painted in Virgin Blue colours.
