British long-haul carrier Virgin Atlantic has commenced operations with the first of its new Airbus A330-300 airliners. The initial service flown by the new aircraft departed Manchester International Airport on April 2 for Orlando International Airport in Florida as Flight VS75, marking the first twin-engined service undertaken by the airline. Virgin Atlantic had previously operated Airbus A340s on the route. However,the need to reduce fuel costs resulted in the carrier placing an order for six new A330-300s on December 30,2009, plus a further four new examples on lease from the Dutch company AerCap (see Virgin Signs For Ten A330-300s, February 2010, p7).
