The Luftwaffe (German Air Force) unmanned air vehicle (UAV) reconnaissance squadron based at Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan, the Einsatzgeschwader Mazar-e-Sharif, has passed its 3,000th flight hour with the Elbit Heron I. The unmanned system took over reconnaissance missions from the Luftwaffe's Tornados in late 2010. The unit reports to the Regional Command North (RCN). While none of the Herons have been damaged by hostile actions, in 2010 one accidentally executed a restart sequence without the operator noticing it and collided with a Luftwaffe C160D Transall transport, causing minor damage on both.
