Northrop Grumman unveiled the Firebird optionally piloted vehicle (OPV) on May 5. The aircraft can operate either as a regular manned aircraft or as an unmanned aerial system (UAS), and can be switched between the two configurations quickly. Built by Scaled Composites of Mojave, California, owned by Northrop Grumman, the distinctive aircraft (N355SX, c 001) first flew in February 2010 and has already been demonstrated to senior US military officials. Firebird is a medium altitude long endurance (MALE) UAS with a ceiling of 30,000ft (9,144m). It is capable of 40-hour missions powered by two Lycoming TEP-540s. Firebird is designed for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), but also has two weapon hardpoints.
