Reports in late April suggested that the Dassault Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon had effectively been down-selected and shortlisted to meet India's long-running 50,000 Crore ($11 billion) requirement for a new Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). In fact, Eurofighter and Dassault Aviation Rafale were asked to extend the validity of their commercial bids, which would otherwise have expired, while other bids (from Boeing for the Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin for the F-16IN Super Viper, Saab for the Gripen NG, and Mikoyan for the MiG-35) were allowed to lapse. SAAB confirmed that the Gripen had not been shortlisted, while the US Ambassador expressed his country's deep disappointment at the news, but emphasized that the United States was "respectful of the procurement process", and was "reviewing the documents received from the Government of India." The Indian MMRCA requirement represents arguably the most important ongoing fighter acquisition programme, since India has outlined a need for at least 126 fighters, with an option for an additional 74 aircraft, taking the potential total to 200 aircraft.
