The Russian defence ministry has decided to establish an Antonov An-124 Ruslan depot-level overhaul capability at its Staraya Russa aircraft repair plant in the Novgorod Region, also known as 123 Aviacionniy Remontniy Zavod (Aviation Repair Facility). This undertaking will necessitate a sizeable investment in the reconstruction of the airfield and construction of a new hangar capable of accommodating two Ruslans. The Voyenno Vozdushnye Sily Rossii's (Russian Air Force) An-124 fleet comprises 23 aircraft, most of which are grounded as they are in need of overhaul, life-extension and modernisation. The establishment of an overhaul facility under Russian Ministry of Defence control will enable the fleet to return to service quicker.
