On December28, 2010 a ceremony marking the introduction into service of the first three production-standard Kamov Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters marked the long-awaited official inauguration of the type into Russian Army Aviation service. The helicopters are operated by the 344th Combat Training and Aircrew Conversion Centre, at Torzhok, northwest of Moscow. Since February 2011 four Ka-52s have been used for training an initial cadre of instructor pilots, who in turn began training crews for the first frontline Ka-52 squadron based at Vozdvizhenka in Russia's Far Eastern Military District. The squadron received its first four Ka-52s on May 24, 2011, and is set to get four more this year. Making its maiden flight in June 1997, the coaxial rotor, two-seat Ka-52 is an armoured attack helicopter, which was originally intended to be procured in small numbers for Russia's Army Aviation, and to be fielded for special forces.
