In an example of how new tablet devices can be used in different ways, United-Continental is planning to move to paperless cockpits by employing over 11,000 iPads. At a media briefing at Chicago O'Hare, Illinois, the company said the electronic flight bag (EFB) provided by each iPad will have aeronautical navigation charts and flight manuals installed, replacing the paper versions. Jeppesen is providing the service with its Mobile FliteDeck apps. United-Continental said using the iPads would replace 38lb (17kg) of flight manuals and paper on each flight, enabling the carrier to save 326,000 US gallons (1.2 million litres) of fuel per year. The airline, the world's second-largest, says it is the first major network carrier to roll out EFBs for all its pilots, although back in May Alaska Airlines became the first airline to use them. Delta Air Lines is also reportedly testing tablet devices, while American Airlines tested an EFB system earlier this year.
