The fifth Boeing C-17A Globemaster III for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) was handed over at a ceremony at the manufacturer's final assembly facility at Long Beach, California, on September 14. The aircraft (A41-210, c F-239, ex 11-0210) was welcomed into service with No.36 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland, on September 23. The fifth C-17A was ordered on March 1, instead of an additional two Lockheed Martin C-130J Hercules, under Project Air 8000 Phase 1. At the arrival ceremony Defence Minister Stephen Smith announced that a sixth example of the heavy transport had been ordered. A tetter of request has been sent to the US Government seeking cost and availability information on the additional aircraft. According to the RAAF, the purchase of a sixth aircraft would double the number of C-17As available for operational missions at any one point.
