Since September 25 a German Navy Lockheed P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft has been stationed in Djibouti, where it is carrying out anti-piracy patrols as part of the European Union Naval Force's Operation Atalanta. On September 29 the Orion conducted its first flight along the coast of Somalia, looking for pirate bases. The aircraft is from Marinefliegergeschwader 3 (Naval Air Wing 3) 'Graf Zeppelin' based at Nordholz, Germany. It will take part in Atalanta until December. Prior to receiving the P-3, 100,0001b (45 tonnes) of ground support equipment and spare parts were flown to Djibouti aboard an Antonov An-124 operated by Volga Dnepr.
