A British company based at Bedford has developed a portable unmanned air system. BiueBear Ltd's iSTART is a small, lightweight system designed to be hand-launched for a range of surveillance operations. It carries realtime sensors that provide electro-opticat and infrared video feeds. The vehicle measures just 750mm (2ft 5in) and the ground control system is carried in a backpack. BlueBear will offer the aircraft for military and government customers but is also actively marketing it for civilian applications. For example, it has already been trialled to monitor livestock movements in the countryside. "ISTART is rugged, modular and upgradeable. The hot, swappable, modular batteries and payloads facilitate maximum operational flexibility and the modular design allows the systems to be easily upgraded as technology moves forward," said BlueBear.
