On October 16 the Uganda PeopLe'sDefence Force received another two Sukhoi Su-30MK2 fighters from Russia. Uganda ordered eight aircraft last year and received the first two in July, via an Antonov An-124 Ruslan (see Uganda Receives Su-30MK2s, September, p21). One of them was damaged by a bird strike on September 8 and grounded for three weeks until Rosoboronexport fixed the engine. The Su-30MK2s were formally commissioned at a ceremony at Entebbe Air Base on July 25 and inspected by President Yoweri Museveni, who said he had gone to Russia last year to personally select the fighters. The Su-3Os are a major boost to the Ugandan People's Defence Force Air Wing, which only has five Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-23s and seven MiG-21s in its combat force. It has 16 helicopters, but many are non-operational.
