In October Thales was awarded a contract by the European Space Agency to research how unmanned air systems (UAS) can be used for satellite communications (satcom) within civilian airspace. Thales' Watchkeeper UAS is involved in the nine-month study to assess how they can be used to relay command and control signals via satcom. The research is taking place within a block of controlled airspace. It is the first area of research for a partnership created by the European Space Agency and the European Defence Agency.
