In mid-May, America's largest and 49th state, Alaska was the venue for Indo-Pacific Command's biennial large force exercise, Northern Edge. Once known as US Pacific Command or PACOM, a name held since its January 1947 inception, today the Hawaii-based command is known as Indo-Pacific Command or INDOPACOM. The name change was announced in Honolulu by the then US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on May 30, 2018, in what Mattis described as, "recognition that all nations large and small are essential to the region, in order to sustain stability in ocean areas critical to global peace."
