In June, the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defence announced the Irkut Corporation would receive an order for upgraded Su-30SM fighters fitted with more powerful AL-41F-1S engines. Designated the Su-30SMD, deliveries of the new fighters will begin in 2021, and one of the first units to re-equip will be the 790th Fighter Aviation Regiment, based at Khotilovo. Russian Ministry of Defence contracts signed with Irkut between 2012 and 2016 covered 116 Su-30SM fighters, all of which have been delivered to replace MiG-29s. The first deliveries were delivered to the 120th Fighter Aviation Regiment at Domna near the city of Chita close to the Chinese border in November 2013. Two other units re-equipped with the Su-30SM the 31st Regiment at Millerovo near the Ukrainian border and the 14th Regiment at Khalino. Both regiments now have 24 aircraft in operation flown by two squadrons.
