AUSTRALIA REMAINS in the grip of the worst bushfires it has ever encountered as the Antipodean summer continues into March According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), more than ten million hectares of land has burned - equivalent to 40% of the entire UK - and that figure is still climbing. Intense rainfall extinguished blazes by more than half towards the end of January, providing some respite for firefighters, military personnel, volunteers and civilians, but multiple infernos continue to threaten life and lands as AIR International went to press.
