THE PENTAGON'S Defense Innovation Unit artificial intelligence (Al) and machine learning group has awarded a contract to C3,ai for software that predicts when military aircraft will need repairs, The artificial intelligence-based application could make more aircraft available for missions and, according to DIU leaders, potentially save an estimated $3 to $5 bn annually in maintenance expenditure, activities that currently costs the Department of Defense (DoD) $292bn each year. The $95m contract is expected to run for five years.
