TWO NEW Beechcraft King Air 200s are now undertaking surveillance flights for the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). The aircraft and their crews, based at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, are provided by 2Excel Aviation's Special Missions division. The aircraft are on hand to respond 24 hours a day, 365 days a year supporting the MCA's search and rescue (SAR), law enforcement, fisheries protection and pollution detection activities in UK waters. The aircraft, G-HMGA (c BB-744) and G-HMGB (c BB-752), are the first King Airs to be used by a coastguard agency. They enable the MCA to conduct wide-area searches and co-ordinate responses, enabling the agency's SAR helicopters to focus on operations where they are most effective. Their introduction follows a 2016 trial involving an Eastern Airways Jetstream 41, which concluded that fixed-wing aircraft were capable of rapid response, were cost-effective and offered enhanced endurance.
