THE FIRST examples of Rolls-Royce's 140-inch (3.56m) diameter fan blades for its UltraFan demonstrator engine are being manufactured at the company's technology hub in Bristol. These will be the largest fan blades in the world. Rolls-Royce claims its UltraFan will offer a 25% fuel reduction and a similar percentage in emission compared with the first generation of Trent engine, This efficiency is achieved by a 1,5401b (700kg) weight reduction thanks to composite fan blades and fan case, It also features a new engine core architecture to deliver maximum fuel burn efficiency and low emissions; components made from advanced ceramic matrix composites which are heat resistant that operate more effectively in high turbine temperatures; and a geared design to maximise high-thrust, high-bypass ratio engine efficiency.
