TWO ROLLS-ROYCE Pearl 700 engines successfully powered the brand new Gulfstream G700 on the type's maiden flight on February 14. Gulfstream G700 N700GA (c 87001) used a 30/70 blend of sustainable aviation fuel for the flight from Savannah International Airport, Georgia. The flagship jet took off at 1:19pm local time and landed 2hrs and 32 mins later; the first flight of an intensive flight test programme. The Pearl 700 engine was developed at the Rolls-Royce Centre of Excellence for Business Aviation Engines in Dahlewitz, Germany. According to Rolls-Royce, the Pearl 700 combines the Advance2 engine core with a brand-new low-pressure system, resulting in an 8% increase in take-off thrust rated at 18,2501b (81.8kN) compared with the earlier BR725 engine. The company reckons the Pearl 700 offers 12% better thrust-to-weight ratio and 5% higher efficiency, such that the G700 will be capable of flying at Mach 0,925, nearly as fast as the speed of sound.
