BAE Systems successfully completed the maiden flight of the 'Spiral 1' Mantis medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) autonomous unmanned aircraft over the Woomera test range in South Australia on October 21. A number of additional flights - believed to be four - were conducted soon afterwards to demonstrate the capabilities of the system and were concluded over the weekend of November 5/6, ending phase one of the programme. During at least some of the flights the aircraft carried an L-3 Wescam MX-30 electro-optical/infrared sensor and a Polytech 350 camera. Details of the flights were disclosed on November 13.
