Although it might seem counterintuitive to compare the 200-300 seat Dreamliner with the 525-853 seat A380, the 787 has its origins in Seattle's response to the big Airbus. After a disappointing reaction to the 747X, Boeing pushed the smaller, faster, Sonic Cruiser (publicly unveiled on March 29, 2001) as an alternative - promising higher speeds (approximately Mach 0.98) between point-to-point city pairs, rather than offering lower seat/mile costs between major hubs. The 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center transformed the airline industry, however, and forced a growing focus on costs. In December 2002, the Sonic Cruiser was abandoned, and Boeing's attention turned to a slower and more conventional design, though it took advantage of many of the technologies it had been developing for the Sonic Cruiser to try to leverage lower manufacturing and running costs for a new aircraft, announced on January 29, 2003.
